dmj's graphics tips: pinch vortex revisited

The previous tips' Pinch Vortex use inspired me to look for even more interesting effects. The basic principle (as with all reversible domain shifts) is to apply your distortion, do an effect, and then undo the distortion.
All of these effects use Pinch Vortex at an intensity of 50, centered at 0,0. As shown in the Vortex Blur tip, at these settings, the pinch vortex is just about reversible.
I did all these effects at 640x480, and then scaled the results down for use on the web page. Keep this in mind if you think the results are a bit small! Here's the image I used as a basis for all these effects (which looks nicer at its original 640x480):

The first step you should always do is to mask off a circular area in the center. For these pictures, I made the circle as tall as the image, in the center.

Reverse Twirl
To start things off, try Pinch Vortex, KPT Twirl at 30 degrees, and Pinch Vortex:

The regular Twirl spins the center, leaving the edge alone. This variation leaves the center stationary, and moves the edge.

Expanding Feedback
Now try Pinch Vortex, KPT Video Feedback (telescopic feedback, intensity 80, angle 5 degrees), and Pinch Vortex:

This gives you a sort of "expanding" feedback.

Spherical Tiling
Well, sort of. Use KPT Vortex Tiling in its Normal mode. Then apply the Pinch Vortex:

This gives you a kind of spherical tiling.

Pearls
Doing the "spherical tiling" thing backwards (that is, Pinch Vortex followed by Normal Vortex) yields this:

On some images, this creates a look of a large collection of pearls.

Pearls on a Sphere
Simply apply a Pinch Vortex to the "pearls" image:

Swirly Blur
Use Pinch Vortex, KPT Smudge at 45 degrees, intensity 5%, and Pinch Vortex:

Substitute Motion Blur for Smudge if you like.

Swirly Tiles
Pinch Vortex, Pixelize (called Mosaic in Photoshop), and Pinch Vortex:

This can be especially interesting if your tiles are not square.

Swirly Ripples
Pinch Vortex, Ripples, Pinch Vortex:

I used an amplitude of 10 in Picture Publisher. Smaller ripples seem to work better, unless you're really aiming for that ultra-distortion effect.

Swirly Charcoal
Pinch Vortex, Charcoal, Pinch Vortex:

Swirly Wind
Pinch Vortex, Wind, Pinch Vortex:

Swirly Prism
Pinch Vortex, Prism (offset the red and blue channels in opposite directions), and Pinch Vortex again:

This probably wasn't the best picture for this effect; something with more color changes shows this off better.

Smoky Sphere
Set your colors to black and white, use Clouds, then Pinch Vortex:

Experiment
I'm sure there are lots of things I didn't try, mainly because I was too lazy to load up Photoshop and try all the distortion effects it has that Picture Publisher doesn't have. One promising idea is to try the Displace filter.
