dmj's graphics tips: smudge chrome

This is one of my favorite effects. Not too long ago, we used this image on our web pages:

I created this one day while playing around with the KPT Lens F/X's Smudge mode, and applying a "snowy mask" technique to it.
Unfortunately, I wasn't taking careful notes that day, and although I have a general idea of what I did, it seems to be very dependent on the exact settings of the Smudge filter and the offsets used for the snowy mask. It's also possible that there's another step in there (some sort of extra filter) but for the life of me, I can't reproduce this effect. I have the end result - as you can see - but I can't do it again.
The moral of the story is, take notes! If you do something way cool, make sure you write it down immediately or you'll forget, and wish you'd saved the technique earlier. So don't say you haven't been warned...
