dmj's graphics tips: lichen

Here's a homebrew texture which, as yet, I haven't found a use for. But it's nice to know it's there, waiting for that opportunity...
Create a new image in Picture Publisher, any size. Make your colors black and white. Select Image > Effects and choose Clouds from the Texture group. The default settings (smoothness of 50%) are fine, but you can of course change them. Click OK. Now copy this image to the clipboard and paste it back (this is a fast way to make a new layer). Apply the clouds filter again - you'll get different clouds. Do this two or three more times. Now select all your floating objects and change the Merge Mode to Invert. (Technical dweebs: this is an XOR merge mode.) Combine all your objects with the base, and apply the Edge Emboss filter described in an earlier tip. Presto! Instant lichen!

Lichen

You can make your lichen any size; if you make it very big (this one was made at 640x480, with a 256x192 section clipped out) you might want to consider changing the smoothness. Using smoother values will make it seem like you are "closer" to the lichen. You might also want to apply some color to the lichen - try using KPT Gradient Designer with the "Greyscale Mapburst" gradient mode.
